The Museum Chorro de Maita, it's the result of an exhaustive local archeological research that has taken more than 80 years. It constitutes the most important discovery in Cuba regarding an aboriginal settlement. The site has been declared National Monument.
The Museum Chorro de Maíta is located in Banes, in the well-known region as the Archaeological Capital of Cuba, to the north of the province of Holguín.

In the archaeological site El Chorro de Maíta, one of the most important aboriginal burials is found in Cuba. It's a sepulchral enclosure of 2 thousand square meters, in the one that 56 funerals of agro potters are located prepared in the same form, place and depth in that they were discovered.
This museum is only in the Antilles. The project was carried out so that portion of the dug area was contained inside the building, from whose galleries can be observed the archaeological parcel, of 22 000 square meters and the cemetery. Also, they are in exhibition the material evidences extracted of the place.

The groups of agro potters inhabited this territory before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors. They constituted a numerous population, divided in villages, located in the summits of the hills and they reached a significant cultural development.

The village that here existed, it was served as the spring that it runs to about 100 m to the south of the place. Of there their name Chorro de Maita .
