Sancti Spiritus

Sancti Spiritus Cuba. The settlement of Espiritu Santo - now Sancti Spiritus, is the birthplace of troubadours and one of the Cuban cities where it is easiest to enjoy Nature. It's in the center of the island, at 386 kilometers of the Cuban capital, near Lake Zaza, biggest reservoir of sweet water of Latin America, Rio Negro, in the area of the Hanabanilla, Topes de Collantes, Trinidad, an extensive territory named, Valle de los Ingenios , and important tobacco - growing areas and the mountains.

The southern coast of the province is flat, but the western portion of Sancti Spíritus province is mountainous. The southeast has numerous mangroves and swamps. The northern coast contains significant wetlands and protected areas such as the Bay of Buena Vista and the Caguanes National Park.

Topes de Collantes, literally Collantes' Highs, almost 800 meters (2,625 ft) above sea level, along with Potrerillo peak, 931 meters (3,054 ft) and the taller San Juan peak, 1,140 meters (3,740 ft) are located in the Escambray range. These mountains are shared by the three central provinces of the island; Villa Clara Province to the north, Cienfuegos Province and Sancti Spiritus Province to the east and west respectively. The wet winds coming off the Caribbean Sea have made the north face of the mountains a luxurious refugee for plants and animals, while the drier south face hosts important ecosystems, in which it lie two famous UNESCO World Heritage sites; Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills), and Trinidad city, both a living examples of early XVII century wealthy colonial Cuba.

Zaza reservoir, is the largest man made reservoir in Cuba. It was developed on the course of the Zaza River, which flows from Sierra del Escambray to the Tunas Channel in the Caribbean Sea and is Cuba's second longest river (after Rio Cauto ). Other rivers that empty into the reservoir include the Yayabo, Taguasco and Tuinucú Rivers.
The 6 km long dam was built over a 3 year period and was completed on December 7, 1971. A hydroelectric plant was subsequently added in 1978.
The water of the reservoir is used to irrigate the farmlands to the south all the way to the Caribbean coast. Fishing (both leisure and commercial) is also an important activity on the reservoir. One of the largest fresh water fish in the world, arapaima gigas, was introduced to the waters in 1980.

Sancti Spiritus symbol is the Yayabo Bridge, one of Cuba's oldest bridges, which span the Yayabo River, on whose banks the old city sprawls. From the bridge, you can see lovely colonial mansions. Built in 1815 with clay bricks it forms 5 arcs being the center one 9 meters tall. The entire bridge is only 85 meters long and was designed for pedestrians and carriages during Colonial Cuba but has resisted modern heavier traffic so far.

The Parroquial Mayor (Main Parish) Church is the pride of the townspeople, for its proof of the antiquity of the settlement, which became a city through royal decree in 1867. Strolling through the city streets, you will be enfolded in a sense of great peace.
Birthplace of troubadours: Songs written in Sancti Spiritus speak of a traditional musical spirit, which is particularly evident in the House of Music and Troubadours' House Cuba Sancti Spiritus Cuba.
You can rent a car in Sancti Spiritus and drive to Trinidad, Cuba's colonial jewel and is located to 67 km southwest of Sancti Spiritus and 80 km to the east of Cienfuegos. Trinidad has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Known as the Museum city of the Caribbean Sea, it is the most colonial of all the cities on the island. To walk on its stone streets, admire its churches and parks, paralyze yourself in front of its old houses examples of Spanish culture in America, are just some of the experiences you have to live in this magical corner of Cuba.
