ArtemisaProvincia Artemisa is the name of one of the two new provinces (Artemisa and Mayabeque) approved by the National Assembly of Cuba in August 2010 and whose operation came into force as of January 1, 2011. It is made up of 8 municipalities of the Province of Havana and three municipalities of the Pinar del Río province.
The new province of Artemisa becomes the thirteenth in the country for its extension and the eleventh for its population, as well as the province with the highest population density. It borders on the west with Pinar del Río, on the north with the Strait of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, on the south with the Gulf of Batabano and on the east with the province of Havana and the Mayabeque Province.
The Artemiseña population is 502 392 inhabitants and its surface area is 4 thousand 004.27 km2. Artemisa has an agricultural area of 272,849 hectares, 68.1% of the territory, which allows it to produce food to meet its demand and support the capital.
The main port is Mariel, one of the most important in the country, with prospects for investment and growth, within the framework of a special economic zone developed by the government.
Longest river: Los Colorados (Hondo de San Cristóbal) 113.2 km. of long and the Greater elevation: The Pan of Guajaibón with 692 meters of height.
The Artemisa province has a total of 11 municipalities, Mariel, Guanajay, Caimito, Bauta, San Antonio de los Baños, Güira de Melena, Alquizar, Artemisa, Bahía Honda, Candelaria and San Cristóbal.
The province has three excellent bays of stock market in the North coast (Bay Honda, Cabins and Mariel), all with port facilities. The largest river is the San Cristóbal with 62 km long and a basin of 424 km² that starts in the Sierra del Rosario and flows into the south coast. The north coast is fundamentally rocky while the south is low with extensive extensions of mangrove and swampy areas. There are great water resources and numerous reservoirs.
The climate is tropical or subtropical humid with temperatures that do not exceed 35 ° C in summer. In winter, cold fronts frequently arrive, causing a considerable decrease in temperature at dawn, which can drop to 4-8 ° C in the plain of red soil (Güira de Melena) and even lower in the elevations of the Sierra del Rosario.
The economy of the area is mainly agricultural and livestock with crops of sugar cane, bananas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, tomatoes and other foods and tropical vegetables, citrus and fruit. Tobacco is also grown (around San Antonio). There is logging in the Sierra del Rosario and platform fishing is practiced in the settlements on the south coast.
