Granma is the province of the big contrasts between landscapes, like plains of the Cauto river and the heights of the Sierra Maestra, and between the south coast, overlooking the Caribbean Sea, featuring the awesome spectacle of marine terraces like a giant ladder into the Sierra and the coast of the Gulf of Guacanayabo, low and swampy.

The longest river in Cuba, the Cauto, has 250 km of its course in this province and forms an immense plain, mostly planted in sugar cane and rice.

The magnificent Sierra Maestra in this area shows an impressive cliff 200 m high that is embedded in the sea, forming the East Fossae to more than 7 000 m under the water level.

Bayamo (San Salvador de Bayamo), capital of the province, was the second town founded by Diego Velazquez in Cuba (November 1513). Bayamo has great significance in the history of Cuba. Ten days after the start of the War of Independence, on 20 October, the city was taken by the guerrillas and became the capital of the Republic in Arms.
